DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, July 25 (AFP) - 15h04 - Two
rebels of the outlawed Kurdish Workers Party (PKK)
were killed in clashes with Turkish security forces
in the mainly Kurdish southeast of the country,
local security sources said Monday.
The clash took place Sunday in a mountainous region
of Sirnak province, on the border of Iraq and Syria,
during an operation led by the Turkish army, the
sources said.
Two machine guns, four grenades and some explosives
were found on the bodies of the two Kurdish rebels,
the sources added.
The PKK has intensified its attacks on the army over
the past several months, after it called off a
five-year unilateral ceasefire in June 2004 on the
grounds that steps taken by Ankara to expand Kurdish
freedoms were insufficient.
The PKK and the Turkish army waged a war between
1984 and 1999 that claimed some 37,000 lives.
