Turkey-Kurdistan: 1000 square meters of lands have been openly burning  19.7.2005

ŞIRNAK (DIHA) - Şırnak Chairman of the Democratic People Party (DEHAP) Izzet Belge said 1000 square meters of lands on Mounts Besta, Gabar and Cudi, Şırnak, have been openly burning to ashes with intensifying military operations, and that none of the officials has taken even a single step to put out the fire.

And Ahmet Ertak, the Mayor of Şırnak who stated to have conversed with Şırnak deputies on recent forest fires in the region, said he told the Şırnak deputies "I call out all the fire brigades in the towns affiliated to Şırnak if required. All sectors of the society will help extinguish the fires, too. However, unfortunately, no positive result came out at the end of my attempts".

Increase in the forest fires that occurred after intensifying clashes are making regional residents worry. As a result of not intervening in the fires happening at the time of military operations conducted on Mounts Besta, Gabar and Cudi, 1000 square meters of lands have burnt down, and ash clouds started appearing over Şırnak.

Belge: People who want to extinguish the fire are being hindered
DEHAP Şırnak Chairman Izzet Belge, who quoted Şırnak Governor Osman Güneş as saying "I cannot hazard any one's life for a tree" DEHAP Şırnak Chairman OSMAN, said "the governor of Şırnak is not serious in his expressions and they are not reflecting the truth. No one has hitherto lost his/her life in non-conducted interventions in the fires. On the contrary, the governor has been making great attempts to burn the forests"

"The forest burnt furiously''
Şırnak Mayor Ahmet Ertak said they had wanted to intervene in the fires occurring on Mounts Besta, Gabar and Cudi." Şırnak is one of the most leading cities in which dense clashes are witnessed. Especially in the early 1990s, our forest had burnt down before the very eyes of the society for long days. For some reason or other, neither state officials nor local ones did take action to have the fires extinguished ", continued Ertak.

Stating his view that to see the forest burning openly is quite painful, and the officials should experience the same pains, Ertak said "We wish the officials not remain non-reactive to the fires. That while all of the organs of the State are mobilized for those fires happening in the Mediterranean, Aeagen, Marmara or the Black Sea regions as well as in an other large part of the country, no one turns a hand to put out the fires next to us is a big contradiction."

'Attempts ended in failure'
Ertak also underlined that he had been able to arrive at the governor of Şırnak for extinguishing the fire, and that he had said 'Almost our own lungs are burning; because, the more forests burn the more lungs fire' to Şırnak Deputies on the phone. "I also other my sadness about forest fires, and told I call out all the fire brigades in the towns affiliated to Şırnak if required. All sectors of the society will help to extinguish the fires, too. However, unfortunately, no positive result came out at the end of my attempts"

Military operations had been launched after an explosion happened in a delivery car on the outskirts of Mount Cudi, and following the militaries' withdrawl from the region 8 separate fires were reported from the region. Even from the city center of Şırnak are seen the fires though none of them was intervened for days. On the days when fires were lasting, Governor of Şırnak Osman Güneş said, when members of the Şırnak Yeşeren Youth Association asked why no extinguishing affair had been started, "I can hazard people's lives where a mine exploded just two days ago. I have been also stopping those who want or went to put out the fire. New trees can planted in place of blasted ones, but we cannot do anything for one who died"

The fires which started on Mount Gabar on July 8 lasted for a long time.
