Turkey should consider how the Iraqi government
would reply to a possible Turkish military operation
in the north of Iraq against outlawed Kurdistan
Workers' Party (PKK) bases there, said a top U.S.
military official.
The comments of Gen. Richard Myers, the U.S.
chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, came in
response to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who
earlier said that Turkey reserved the right to carry
out cross-border operations in neighboring Iraq,
where a few thousand PKK terrorists are believed to
be based. |

Turkey has made military incursions into Iraq in the
past to hunt down the PKK terrorists. Faced with an
escalation in PKK attacks in southeastern Anatolia,
Turkey has been pressing the United States and the
Iraqi government to crack down on PKK mountain
bases, but no action has been taken by either Iraqi
or U.S. authorities.
Asked about the U.S. position on a possible Turkish
operation on the PKK in Iraqi territory, similar to
ones that Turkey carried out in the past, Myers said
the sovereign Iraq would have a lot to say on that.
"I think the difference now is that Turkey is
dealing with a sovereign Iraqi government. It would
require a series of contacts between Turkish and
Iraqi authorities," Myers was quoted as telling a
news conference in Washington by the Anatolia news
agency.
