ISTANBUL, July 11 (AFP) - 20h00 - A Kurdish
rebel was killed on Monday in eastern Turkey
(Kurdistan) as he was preparing to lay explosives
near a railroad, the local authorities said in a
statement.
The Kurd, believed to belong to the separatist
Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was shot in a rural
area by the security services as, with a group of
rebels, he planted explosives near a railroad and
bridges, the semi-official Anatolia news agency
said.
Weapons were also seized at the scene, the statement
said.
Earlier this month six people died when a train was
bombed in a neighbouring province.
The Kurdish conflict in Turkey has claimed about
37,000 lives, most of them between 1984 and 1999,
when the PKK, considered a terror group by both the
United States and the European Union, waged a bloody
campaign for Kurdish self-rule in the region.
Violence in the region has sharply increased over
the past few months, after the PKK called off a
five-year unilateral ceasefire in June 2004 on
grounds that reforms undertaken by Ankara to expand
Kurdish freedoms were insufficient.
