Turkey: Kurdish journalists decide to restructure media organization 1.7.2005

The Democratic Enlightenment Union (YRD) has held its third conference and restructured itself in seven different fields. Attended by Kurdish journalists and intellectuals coming from different parts of the world, the conference decided to reorganize the YRD as Democratic Press Union.

The third conference of the YRD (Yekitiya Rewsengeriya Demokratik), which was held between 4 June and 14 June in a mountainous area of South Kurdistan [northern Iraq] adopted a resolution intended to restructure the organization. The YRD, which decided to reorganize itself in seven fields, changed its name to Democratic Press Union (Yekitiya Ragihanda Demokratik-YRD).

Attended by more than 100 delegates coming from different parts of the world, the conference captured attention because it was the most broad-based conference ever held. The YRD, which has an autonomous organizational structure, decided to establish branches in all regions where Kurds live, especially in Kurdistan and the Middle East as "an expression of free thoughts of people". Following deliberations on the proposed restructuring, which continued for 11 days, projects embracing all areas were devised. The final communique issued after the conference said: "The YRD has decided to reinforce its populist line, which provides an alternative to the press of the global imperialist system."

Gurbetelli Erzos School of Journalism

The conference also decided to establish "Gurbetelli Ersoz School of Journalism" in order to educate "free journalists" and "to promote Kurdish language and culture". The conference emphasized that media establishments under the YRD's umbrella should pursue a policy aimed at enlightening peoples about the ideas and liberation of Abdullah Ocalan, leader of Kurdistan Democratic Confederalism.

The YRD's statement said: "Considering the political conditions prevailing today and the fresh impetus given to our struggle for freedom and democracy, the third conference of the YRD has assumed greater importance. Our conference produced concrete steps aimed at meeting our people's needs in the field of media during this period, which resulted from the leader's perspective."

Arrangements within the KKK system

The final communique noted that the YKD had reorganized itself within the system called Koma Komalen Kurdistan (KKK) in accordance with the principles of Democratic Confederalism.

The conference expressed self-criticism and concluded that the YRD could not accomplish its mission to provide ideological guidance in order to overcome organizational and political problems experienced in the past. It was, however, noted that the conference platform emphasized its commitment to educate and inform the public within the framework of "restructuring," "ideological guidance," "enlightening" and "the new paradigm".

Amara and Uta named as honorary members

Regarding the outcome of the conference and the decisions made, the final communique noted: "The YRD, which is an expression of peoples' democracy, concluded that casualties suffered during the struggle for freedom as the primary source of strength and named Ekin Ceren Dogruak (Amara) and Uta Schneiderbanger (Nudem), who lost their lives as a result of an unfortunate accident, as honorary members due to their international personalities and their affection for and loyalty to peoples.

The YRD expressed its determination to ensure that the memory of Amara and Uta as well as all martyrs of free press was venerated during the struggle for freedom and democracy."

The final communique, which noted that the media activities had entered a new era after the YRD's third conference, emphasized that "establishment and functioning of the KKK system" and "transforming the retrial process of the KKK leader into a platform for finding a democratic solution to the Kurdish question" could only be possible as a result of an unrelenting struggle to be waged in all fields.

The final communique ended with the following appeal: "Resolved to accomplish our mission to spearhead the peoples' struggle for democracy and freedom, the YRD calls on all peoples, especially the Kurdish people to support the YRD and to watch and control our media establishments and to act as the main architects of the new campaign by voicing their opinions, suggestions and criticisms."
