SULAYMANIYAH, - Last week, the local police in
Sulaymaniyah city, in Iraqi Kurdistan region, have
arrested a number of Islamic activist of the members
of the moderate Kurdistani Islamic Federation, and
started a detention campaign in one of the city
districts, where members of the police have raided a
mosque and arrested 20 persons, who were having a
meeting in the mosque, according to a statement of a
police official to al Sharq Al Awsat.
One day later, two members of the same federation
have been arrested in Jemjamal town (70 km south of
Sulaymaniyah); one of them is the head of the
students' organization in the region. The local
police, in coordination with regiments under
Sulaymaniyah security directorate, have raided the
houses of a number of residents and searched them in
Halabja town, (70 km east of Sulaymaniyah),. There
were contradictory statements on the reasons of the
raid and search operations.
While the local police chief said that the police
are looking for dens that are used to forge money, a
security official said that the regiments under his
directorate are looking for members of "Ansar Al
Islam" organization, who have sneaked across the
Iranian borders.
In a statement to Al Sharq Al Awsat, a source of the
Islamic Federation has considered the practices of
the police as a provocation that aims at "having
strong pressure" on his party, which is considered
the third with regard to the presence in Kurdistan
parliament, with its 9 seats, especially after the
circulated news about the possibility of the
creation of a sort of alliance between the Islamic
Federation and the Islamic Group, which also
occupies 6 seats in the local parliament.
