London, Monday 18
July 2005 (KDC) – The Kurdistan Development
Corporation, a joint investment initiative between
the Kurdistan Regional Government and international
business people, announced the opening of a branch
in Munich, Germany.
Douglas Layton, Director of KDC Erbil said: “This is
a logical step for KDC. Several large German
corporations are looking closely at Kurdistan as the
stable commercial gateway to Iraq. Germany has one
of the largest Kurdish disapora, many of whom are
successful businessmen looking to reinvest in their
homeland.”
Mr Siggy Martsch has been appointed KDC Director for
Germany, he is a native German and former Member of
Parliament who lobbied strongly for the Kurds. Mr
Martsch, who is also owner and director of Martsch
International Gmbh, has lived and worked in
Kurdistan for the past 15 years. He has gained
respect and influence in the region where he is
commonly known as Siggy ‘Barzani’, the name of both
the President and Prime Minister.
Mr Marsch said: “Serious interest in Kurdistan by
German companies is already evident; Siemens are
working successfully on the ground and Vossing
Engineering have just won a contract to design a
sewage system for Erbil city. Our office in Germany
will further promote the region and facilitate
business for the German companies that are bound to
follow.”
Earlier this month KDC facilitated a 2.4 million
dollar deal between the Kurdistan Regional
Government Ministry for Municipalities and German
company Vossing Engineering to design a sewage
system for Erbil City. On signing the contract, the
Kurdish Minister for Municipalities, Mr Barzan
Dizayee said that he was paying for ‘German
quality’.
One of KDC Germany’s first initiatives has been to
facilitate a delegation of senior Kurdish ministry
officials and businessmen to attend the 2nd
German-Iraqi Business Conference, organised by the
Munich & Oberbayern Chamber for Commerce and
Industry and taking place in Munich, 18-20 July
2005.
Additionally, KDC is organising a delegation of
international businessmen to attend the DBX
Kurdistan Trade Show in Erbil, 15-18 September 2005
(contact KDC London for more details +44 (0)20 7170

Internationally, the remit of the KDC falls between
politics and business development and, as such, is
an Investment Holdings and Promotions Agency;
working in close conjunction with the Kurdistan
Regional Government to identify and implement
projects that accelerate the redevelopment of
Kurdistan. KDC already has established offices in
London and Erbil and outreach posts or personnel in
Dohuk, Suleimani, Baghdad and the US.
