Ankara is cautious about the proposal to fly into
Kurdistan (northern Iraq).
ANKARA - The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK)
has proposed to the Turkish government that Turkish
Airlines (THY) commence direct return flights twice
a week from Istanbul into northern Iraq.
The PUK, one of two main Kurdish factions in
northern Iraq, suggested the flights use the
Suleymaniye Airport, which was just opened to
international arrivals on Wednesday. The first
international flight to the airport in the PUK
controlled city was by Jordanian Airlines.
Kurdish representatives apparently stressed to
Turkish officials that Iraqis conduct most of their
flights abroad via Turkey and that it takes a long
time to drive all the way back into Iraq from
Diyarbakir.
Turkey has recently given approval for flights
between Istanbul and Baghdad, though these are not
operating due to the security situation in Iraq.
