ARBIL, (KUNA) - A Kurdish committee
formed by the two main Iraqi Kurdish political
parties, the KDP and the PUK, to follow up the
drawing of Iraq's new constitution held a meeting
Thursday to debate the draft constitution and
coordinate stances.
Member of the Massoud-Barzani-led Kurdistan
Democratic Party (KDP), Mulla Bekhtiar said a
delegation of the committee will head to Baghdad in
the next few days to explain the Kurdish coalition
views to all parties concerned with drawing the
constitution up, such as the presidency, the cabinet
and the parliament.
Dr. Kamal Al-Kirkoki, a KDP leading official
elaborated, for his part, on the Kurds' demands. He
said the Kurds want Iraq to be named the "Federal
Republic of Iraq", and to control Kurdistan's
natural resources and keep Kurdish armed forces in
the province.
"We insist on recognizing the Kurdish ethnicity and
respecting their rights and those of other groups
such as the Caledonians, Assyrians and others," he
said. He added the region's natural resources should
be fully owned on the basis that five percent of the
revenues should go to the province, 60 percent for
the region's government and 35 percent for the
federal government, he concluded.
