Culture of Life vs Culture of Death, by Dr. Saman Shali 11.7.2005
Where Islam Stands

9/11 changed the lives of everyone, in one way or other, not just the life of Americans but of many people around the world. That day turned into an official day for the start of the fight against terrorism internationally. It established a dividing line between two camps: the camp of those committed to a Culture of Life and those committed to a Culture of Death.

The American people sadly have been misunderstood internationally. The rest of the world does not understand why a firefighter climbs to the top of the twin towers to save other people's lives while endangering his own.

If we look back in history, the American Army went to fight Nazi Germany during WWII to save Europe from the Culture of Death manufactured by the Germans against most of the European countries and especially against the Jews. They did not go to occupy Germany or Europe; on the contrary, they installed a strong political system where the culture of life has flourished since then. In such an environment, political parties promote education, economy, health, improved standards of living, and research and development. Today we see these European countries competing to be a champion of human rights and fighting against the Culture of Death and are part of the international community in the war against terrorism. A similar thing happened in Japan and Korean during WWII.

When Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, the Americans led the world in forming one of the biggest coalitions to stop Saddam from promoting the culture of death as a way to intimidate neighboring countries. The coalition freed Kuwait neither the Americans nor any other country remained controlling Kuwait. Today Kuwait is a free country where democracy is gradually becoming the way the government operates.

The Americans were welcomed by the Islamic countries when they supported the Moslem freedom fighters against the communists to liberate Afghanistan. Unfortunately, when the Afghans got their victory, Islamist extremist turned against America and the country became a haven for terrorists until the US and it allies librated Afghanistan. A democratic government was installed and today Afghanistan is reaping the fruit of freedom day by day.

The United States and its allies decided to free the Iraqi people from a brutal regime. By now it is clear to all that the coalition’s goal is to install a free democratic government with a strong political system that believes in and respects human rights, democracy, freedom and promote the culture of life, much like what happened in Europe, Japan, Korea, Afghanistan and Kuwait.

One can ask why Americans went to all these wars, although none of these wars were against the US. What can US gain from these wars? Does the US gain any economical advantage by leading these wars and endangering the lives of its citizens? What can the US get out of these wars but lose more and more of its heroes and create disrespect of Americans especially in the Islamic countries? The only satisfaction that US could get from these wars was to lead the world fight against a Culture of Death while it implements the principle of democracy, freedom, respect of human rights and culture of life. This is what the world is beginning to notice.

The Islamic countries did not act when in the name of Islam many crimes were committed such as the gassing of the Kurds and Iranians by Saddam's outlaw regime. They did not act and indeed not even utter a word of condemnation, when the infamous Al-Anfal operations against the Kurds resulted in the disappearance of more than 180,000 Kurds. The crimes of Saddam’s government filled mass graves with the Kurds and Shiites. Similar crimes in Afghanistan, Sudan, and Asia were equally ignored. One wonders why these countries kept their silence at a time when all the International community was fighting terrorism and condemning these crimes, while the terrorists were using Islam to promote the Culture of Death. Why did they not issue a single "fatwa" forbidding killing Moslems and innocent civilians in the name of Islam? The Holy War (Jihad) called by profit Mohammed was to fight the nonbelievers to worship the one God. Islam never used the Jihad against the people of the Book (Christians and Jews).

What drives those people to blow themselves up? Is it anger, frustration, power, economic hardship, religion, political gain, poor education or personal glory that those reasons are being exploited by the promoters of Culture of Death? To understand these questions we have to look deeper and distinguish between the two cultures, of death and of life. Only then one could make the choice. The choice of any thinking, caring, honest and truly believing Moslem will clearly be to opt for the Culture of Life.

The world, for a time turned a blind eye and deaf ear to what the Nazis did to the Jewish people and to others in WWII, and when Cambodians killed Cambodians and Africans killed Africans in Rwanda. The world took action when it was too late to save millions of lives. Is the world going to let the same thing happen by letting the terrorists win the war against the Culture of Life and humanity?
