Baghdad, Jul. 30 – Iraqi Foreign Minister
Hoshyar Zebari said he had complained to Iranian
leaders in a recent visit to Tehran that Iran
continued to meddle in the affairs of its neighbour.
Speaking on Al-Iraqiya television on Thursday night,
Zebari said, “I recently visited Iran with Prime
Minister [Ibrahim al-Jaafari], where we discussed
these issues with Iranian officials. In particular,
we told them forthright that Iran was meddling in
the internal affairs of Iraq, since this is our
country and we expect our neighbours to cooperate
with us”. |

The Iraqi Foreign Minister’s comments came a day
after United States Secretary of Defence Donald
Rumsfeld renewed his criticism of Iran and Syria for
harbouring the financiers and organisers of the
insurgency in Iraq, and for failing to clamp down on
fighters crossing in through their borders.
On Wednesday, the Jordanian daily Al-Ghad published
an article in which it revealed the role of Iran’s
Ministry of Intelligence and Security (VEVAK) in
Iraq.
“The infiltration of the Iranian regime’s
intelligence agents in various Iraqi political,
economic, and cultural issues is ongoing and each
time stop the pointer of the Iraq’s political
compass in Iran’s direction”, the daily wrote.
