Baghdad, 20 July
(AKI) - A day after three Sunni members of the panel
tasked with drafting Iraq's contsitution were
murdered, attempts to find an inclusive political
system to end the violence in the country suffered
another blow when four other Sunni panel members put
on hold their participation in the Constitutional
Committee.
"The climate in Iraq is not suitable for anyone
trying to complete their job," the spokesman for the
moderate Sunni Association for National Dilaogue,
Salih al Mutlaq said, commenting on the panel
members' decision on Wednesday.
Another Sunni leader, suggested that the remaining
Sunni consitutional committee members - Sunnis have
been allocated 15 seats out of a total of 71 - would
also soon halt their participation in the
deliberations.
The commitee, which is dominated by Shiite and
Kurdish politicians, is expected to present a draft
constitution by mid-August, but its work has been
hampered by squabbles between members, including
demands by the Sunnis that the final document be
approved by consensus rather than a majority vote.
The constitution requires approval in a national
referendum which is expected to be held in October.
