Baghdad, 19 July
(AKI) - Unidentified gunmen on Tuesday opened fire
killing three Sunni representatives on a committee
tasked with drawing up Iraq's proposed constitution.
The three men, Mujbil al-Hajj Aysa, Abd al-Aziz
Ibrahim and Damin Hasan Ulywai were attacked when
they left a restaurant in the central Baghdad
district of al-Karada. "The men died while they were
being taken by an ambulance to a nearby hospital,"
another member of Iraq's constitutional commitee,
Ali al-Dabbagh told Adnkronos International (AKI).
Leaders from Iraq's Sunni minority - which mostly
boycotted the country's general elections in
January, and is underepresented in the National
Assembly parliament - have nominated 15 Sunni
representatives to sit on the constitutional
committee whose 71 members are trying to draft a
permanent constitution for the country.
The constitution has to be approved in a national
referendum which will probably be held in October.
