Baghdad, 12 July (AKI) - Iraqi prime minister
Ibrahim al-Jaafari has confirmed that he will visit
Tehran next Saturday, according to the Iranian news
agency IRNA. Al-Jaafari is quoted as telling the
Iranian charge d'affaires in Baghdad that he was
confident his visit would improve relations between
the two neighbours.
Nine Iraqi government ministers are due in the
Iranian capital on Tuesday to prepare for al-Jaafari's
visit.
From the Iranian point of view, such a high level
delegation from Baghdad is considered a 'turning
point' in bilateral relations between Iran and Iraq,
who were at war from 1980-1988.
During an historic visit to Tehran last week the
Iraqi defence minister, Saadoun al-Dalimi, signed
accords with his Iranian counterpart agreeing to
cooperate more in border security and the fight
against terrorism.
Tehran has committed to providing one billion
dollars for the reconstruction of Iraq, after al-Dalimi,
made a formal apology for the war crimes committed
under the former regime of Saddam Hussein.
