Last
week diplomats from both the Bahraini and Pakistani
embassies were also attacked in Baghdad. Bahrain's
envoy Hassaan al-Ansari was shot, but it was later
announced that he would be promoted to ambassador in
honour and appreciation for what he had done for his
country. Before Egypt's envoy Ihab el-Sherif was
kidnapped and killed, he had been set to become the
first ambassador to Iraq from an Arab country.
The Arab and Islamic nations, and all the other
countries of the world, must not give in to
terrorism, or be influenced by the killing of the
Egyptian ambassador, Zebari told a news conference
at which he invited those countries to send
diplomatic representation to Iraq. "Our message is
that you should respond to these attacks by carrying
on, and continuing to send ambassadors to Baghdad,"
Zebari said, assuring that Iraq is able to protect
diplomats, "without needing to rely on outside
help."
There are currently 45 diplomatic missions in the
Iraqi capital and Zebari hopes to add Kuwait to that
list soon. "We are waiting for a response from them
about sending our ambassador to Kuwait, even though
we know that there are no obstacles on this path and
as soon as the security conditions make it possible,
they will also send diplomats to Baghdad."
"We will open an Iraqi embassy in Kuwait City as
soon as possible," he said. "The presence of our
embassy in the Arab emirate is very important
considering the previous relationship between the
two countries."
