BAGHDAD, July 3 (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney
General Alberto made a surprise single-day visit to
Baghdad on Sunday, meeting top officials and justice
department employees.
A U.S. embassy spokesman said Gonzales met Prime
Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and Iraq's justice and
interior ministers during his previously unannounced
flying visit.
The Justice Department said Gonzales was also
meeting some of the department's 400 staff in Iraq.
They include a large team of investigators that has
been helping Iraq build a war crimes case against
ousted leader Saddam Hussein and other members of
his regime.
U.S. Department of Justice spokeswoman Tasia
Scolinos said Alberto's meetings with members of the
Iraqi government were "to offer his support for what
they are doing in terms of reconstituting or
rebuilding the judicial system in Iraq".
"He's also meeting with the DOJ employees that are
on the ground in Iraq just to express his support
for what they're doing," Scolinos said.
The attorney general has been mentioned as a
possible candidate to take the U.S. Supreme Court
seat being vacated by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor,
who announced her plans to retire last week.
