The
Unified (Iraqi) Homeland (Party) Congress held its
constituent conference in Baghdad today. Al-Sharqiyah
television correspondent reported that the
participants in the conference, which was attended
by many representatives of movements and political
forces in Iraq, warned against the single-handedness
in drafting the constitution and the postponement of
the referendum on it. Other details are in this
report:
(Ahmad Fadil, Al-Sharqiyah correspondent -
recording) The political arena in Iraq is still
witnessing the establishment of coalitions every now
and then among a number of parties and organizations
under one name hoping that that would guarantee them
a prominent presence before the public opinion.
Based on that, the Unified (Iraqi) Homeland Party
held its general constituent conference. The party's
leader Mish'an al-Juburi began its opening
activities by directing a number of warnings against
those assigned to drafting the constitution and the
officials responsible for the forthcoming elections.
(Al-Juburi) There are some parties that are
seeking to draft the constitution single-handedly
and attempt to pass (the laws) they desire through
illegitimate ways, thus wagering on the possibility
of forging the referendum on the draft constitution.
We warn those and we tell them that by so doing,
they will regret their actions. We also warn against
any attempts that aim to postpone the date set for
holding the elections at the end of this year. We
consider that as a rebellion against the democratic
values and an endeavour to hold on to authority.
(Fadil) A number of National Assembly
members, who are representing their parties,
attended this conference. They blessed holding the
conference and its trends which they described as
patriotic. Among these parties are the National
Accord Movement, the Supreme Council for the Islamic
Revolution in Iraq and the Kurdistan Democratic
Party, whose representative Abd-al-Khaliq
Zanghanah stressed that Arabs and Kurds are dealing
with one issue, namely, the establishment of a
democratic, federal and unified Iraq.
(Zanghanah) We
are all here today to continue the hard march of
struggle in one trench to establish a democratic,
pluralistic and federal Iraq. No conspiracy that
aims at creating rift between the two brotherly Arab
and Kurdish people will be successful.
(Fadil) The key trends announced by the
chairman of the conference were mainly characterized
by warnings and threats. Hence, we wonder whether
these warnings and statements aim to send a message
to the officials or to make the name of this new
political entity known. The new blocs are the
outcome of the current phase in which Iraq has been
going through and the founders of these blocs seek
to activate the roles of their parties and various
trends to participate in the political process by
shouting loud (their demands) to change the course
of the Iraqi political issues.
