IZMIR (DIHA) -The Group for the Prevention of
Torture (IOG), taking attention to that none of the
law suits opened for torture in last two-and-a-half
years ended in punishment and the entire assumed
authors of these cases have been acquitted of
charges, said it plays a significant role in why
torment has been lasting in the country that
judicial power does not punish torture crimes.
Releasing a written message on behalf of the UN
International Day in Support of Victims of
Torture-June 26, The Group for the Prevention of
Torture says torture has been acknowledged as a
humanity crime after the struggle against torment
that has continued for centuries, it has still been
used as an extensive method against the accused.
Torture has still been keeping its existence alive
in our country, says the ÝÖG statement, although the
current government, which claimed to make it ''zero
tolerance to torture'' principle, passed a number of
laws thanks to pressures from abroad, yet torture
has been applied systematically. "Insufficient laws
and the resistance of judicial power including
security forces, prosecutors and judges against
torture have given way to the continuation of
systematic torture".
Torture is augmenting
Appraising one of the greatest reasons for why there
is still torture in Turkey as "unpunishment", the
declaration indicates that while the count of the
law suits sued for torture and bad treatment seems
to be 94, this count appeared to be 232 after the
Group for the Prevention of Torture swung into
action.
The statement also figures out that only 10 per cent
of the law suits filed for bad treatment resulted in
penalization, that none of the suspects accused of
torture has been imprisoned for last two-and-a-half
years, namely, all of the accused were clean of
charges.
"The adjudicatory power has not satisfied its
function", says the IÖG statement and make a
sensitivity call for all public opinion and for
those who have responsibility to prevent torture.
