Turkey-Kurdistan, June 22 (DozaMe.org) - One
person was killed and nine others were injured when
demonstrators clashed with Turkish gendarmerie
soldiers on June 21 in the town of Bostaniçi in Van
in northern Kurdistan.
The Kurdish demonstrators were protesting against
the Turkish government's secret burial of two HPG
guerrillas. The guerrillas had died on June 17 in
clashes with Turkish soldiers near the village of
Çalyan in Van. But local sources now say that the
guerrillas were captured alive and died after
intensive and brutal torture.
5,000 protestors gathered outside the DEHAP province
headquarters and walked to the town of Bostaniçi a
couple of miles outside the city center of Van. When
the demonstrators reached Bostaniçi they were
surrounded by Turkish gendarmerie soldiers and the
roads in and out of the town were closed.
The Turkish soldiers tried to disperse the
demonstrators and ignited a clash between soldiers
and demonstrators. The demonstrators threw rocks on
the soldiers and the soldiers answered by shooting
into the crowd. The demonstrator Fahrettin Inan (19)
was killed instantly. Six other demonstrators named
Veysel Laçin, Rahmi Aslan, Menaf Ipek, Bahattin
Aslan, Dilan Bilek and Ekrem Aydin were wounded. Two
journalists, one of them Sükrü Akyüz of the IHA news
agency and one police officer were also wounded.
Veysel Laçin's condition has been reported serious
and he is still under treatment.
The demonstrators were shouting pro-PKK slogans as "HPG
is the people, the people is here", "HPG to the
mountains for retaliation", "The martyrs are
immortal" and "PKK is hitting, creating Kurdistan".
The road in and out of the suburbs of Safak and
Gündogdu in Bostaniçi have been blocked by Turkish
soldiers and the situation is still very tense in
the area.
