Talabani promises to act against PKK
The Iraqi head of state said that the majority of
detentions in Kirkuk were Kurds, although some
Turkmen and Arabs were taken into custody in
operations conducted by anti-terror squad.
- Iraq’s President has said his country will move to
eliminate the presence of the anti-Turkish terrorist
group the PKK in Northern Iraq.
President Jelal Talabani, who is also the leader of
the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan based in the north
of the country, said Iraq would not stay silent to
the presence of the terrorist group PKK and to
actions they take against Turkey.
"The Iraqi government is opposed to the presence of
PKK forces in northern Iraq," Talabani said Friday.
“Our policy is not to have any foreign armed power
settle into Iraq territory and to prevent actions by
militant groups against our neighbours, especially
Turkey,” He said.
However Talabani said they were not in position to
stage any operations against the PKK at the moment
but they would not let anyone to use Iraqi territory
as a base against Turkey.
