Ankara, Tureky, (AGI) June 6 - A strong quake in
eastern Anatolia - especially the Turkish Kurdistan
area - this morning is reported as having injured
37, according to NTV Channel reports based on
Istanbul's Geophysics Observatory.
The quake is described as being 5.7 on the Richter
scale and its epicentre as lying close to Karliova,
in the Bingol province, which had already suffered
similar shocks in March; magnitude peaks at the time
were measured at 5.9 no the Richter. Any buildings
which survived March quakes with partial damage have
finally collapsed after today's earthquake.
Two years the ago the same area suffered an even
larger earthquake which killed 160; that earthquake
is on record as being among Turkey's worst; the 7.4
Richter earthquake in 1999 which struck
north-western parts of the country caused an even
greater disaster killing as many as 17 thousand. (AGI)
