London - 24 June 2005: Osman Ali, one of the
well-known Kurdish singers, passed away at the age
of 63 on the evening of 21 June 2005, in the Kurdish
city of Sulemani, southern Kurdistan, where he was
born and spent most of his life. He was a father of
four and was a tailor by profession.
Osman Ali made his name in the 1970s with a number
of very popular songs, including ‘Emshew shewi
berate’ (lyrics by the late Kurdish poet Medhosh)
and ‘Kesekem’ (lyrics by the late Kurdish poet
Dilshad Mariwani).
Osman was experienced in the Kurdish Maqam. His
well-known duet with Hemeyi Nergis is the evidence
of this. They sing Maqami Xawker ‘Kilawlar’, lyrics
by the late Kurdish poet Abdullah Goran.
Osman remained as a modest man and was loved by the
locals of Sulemani. He will no doubt be missed by
his fans and with his departure leaves a massive gap
on the Kurdish music scene.
