Abdul
Hussein Shandal, the Iraqi justice minister, has
criticized the situation of the American government,
which aims at “the delay” of the trial of the
overthrown president Saddam Hussein.
In a press conference, he confirmed that the central
investigation court, which is responsible for the
trial of Saddam and his top officials, has completed
all the proof relating to their files, while the
American forces refuse to hand the overthrown
president to the court to complete investigating him
and submitting him to trial. He urged the Americans
“To pay great attention to the judges of the special
court and allowing them to practice their
competence.”
Shandal pointed out, “Saddam has the right to
receive a fair trial. He, like other Iraqis, is
subject to the Iraqi criminal law.” He pointed out,
“This right does not cancel the crimes that he
committed.” He added that committing Saddam to a
martial trial before the People’s Court “Might
expose him to death penalty, especially as he
escaped the military service during the entrance of
the American forces to Iraq.”
As for the death penalties that were issued against
a number of Iraqi and Arab “terrorists”, Shandal
said, “The spread of terrorism and the difficulty of
transporting suspects are among the reasons that led
the criminal courts in Al Kut, Babel and Baghdad to
issue the judgments against them.” He pointed out
that he expects similar judgments against persons,
convicted of committing terrorist acts.
The minister justified the non-release of many
detainees in the two detention camps of “Abu Gharib”
and “Buka” by the existence of “obstacles that
hinder the work of the special quartet committee, in
addition to the inability of the detainees, included
in the release, to supply with bailsmen, due to the
refusal of some government employees to bail them.”
He refereed to talks with the American forces to
study the files of thousands of detainees and trying
whoever is proven guilty of committing crimes and
releasing the innocent. He requested the Americans
to cooperate with the Iraqi government to accelerate
the settlement of the files of all detainees.
