DUBAI, June 28 (AFP) - 13h49 - The
Al-Qaeda-linked Army of Ansar al-Sunna said it had
executed a Kurdish security officer in Iraq's main
northern city of Mosul, in an internet statement
posted Tuesday.
The group's militants "captured recruiting officer
Kamal Khaled Zebari, a member of the Patriotic Union
of Kurdistan (PUK) headed by the apostate (Iraqi
President) Jalal Talabani," said the statement,
whose authenticity could not be confirmed.
"After he admitted assisting crusader forces since
they entered Iraq, the rule of God was implemented
and he was executed by firing squad," said the
statement, which was accompanied by photocopies of
the officer's passport and other documents.
There was no immediate word from the PUK, one of two
Kurdish former rebel factions which ruled Iraq's
three far northern provinces in defiance of Saddam
Hussein's regime before the 2003 invasion.
Kurdish peshmerga are still allowed to carry weapons
in those areas, but in ethnically mixed Mosul they
are obliged to obtain licences in line with a
two-year-old ban on militias.
The Army of Ansar al-Sunna has claimed a string of
attacks in Iraq, including murders of foreign
hostages and Iraqis accused of "collaborating" with
US-led forces.
It was one of the insurgent groups that US officials
held talks with earlier this month, according to a
report in the London-based Sunday Times.
