Kurdish-Iranians taking
Iraq's Kurdistan Region as a base for their
anti-Iran political activities have expressed their
concern for the future of liberties in Iran
following Mahmud Ahmadinezhad victory in the Iranian
presidential elections.
Husayn (Yaznabna), leader of the opposition group
known as the Union of Kurdish Rebels, said that the
Ahmadinezhad victory serves to tighten the ruling
religious authority's grip on the remaining
authorities.
The Kurdish official described the Iranian
president-elect as an extremist when it comes to the
opposition, and expressed fears that liberties may
be confiscated and that the new authorities in
Tehran may resort to a policy of assassinating
opposition figures.
For his part, Kamal Karimi, a prominent member of
the opposition Kurdistan Democratic Party, expressed
fears that Ahmadinezhad might adopt a suppressive
policy towards activists in the field of civil
rights and liberties.
