Ranhill To Build Hospital In Violence-prone Kurdistan 22.6.2005

PUTRAJAYA, June 22 (Bernama) - Ranhill Bhd, Malaysia's largest engineering company, assured that it will take part in the reconstruction of post-war Iraq and one of its pioneer projects would be to build a hospital in Kurdistan, northern Iraq.

"Definitely we are taking part in the reconstruction of Iraq. In fact we secured some contracts before the war but unfortunately the war took place. But we are back," Ranhill's chief executive officer Tan Sri Hamdan Mohamad said Wednesday.

"We sent our team (to Iraq) about six months ago and we will build a hospital in Kurdistan. We are coming close to developing the project and the northern Iraqi government will pay for the project," he added.

Hamdan told this to reporters after Ranhill signed an agreement here today with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and Emerging Markets Partnership (Bahrain) that would partially finance the 77km Senai Desaru Toll Road project costing US$368 million.

He said the hospital project was based on Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model and the company was also looking at other viable projects in different sectors.

"We are also looking at mineral, water and power projects in Kurdistan area," he added.

Describing the IDB's financial tie-up as a strategic partnership, Hamdan said the move would pave way for Ranhill to venture into disputed territories, and the company was also ready to invest in troubled Palestine.

"It is not easy to go to commercial banks or foreign banks to get funding (for projects in sensitive areas)," he said.

The company has also secured a project to build a 600-mega watts power plant in Iran, added Hamdan.
