headlined "A southern and central Iraqi region is
established; Dr Adil Abd-al-Mahdi: There is no
disagreement between Shi'i, Kurdish alliances",
published by Iraqi Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK)
newspaper Kurdistani Nuwe on 23 June
Iraqi Vice-President Dr Adil Abd-al-Mahdi has
rejected the idea that there is any conflict between
the Shi'i and Kurdistan alliances over the nature of
federalism and its definition in the permanent
constitution. He said that there is a general accord
over the notion of federalism.
Regarding the security issue, he indicated that the
situation had improved, particularly in Baghdad. He
reiterated that the Iraqi forces are in a charge of
the security question.
In another development, the governorate council of
Kut, Babil and Samawah decided to establish the
southern and central Iraqi region.
The head of the Diwaniyah Governorate Council,
Shaykh Hamid al-Akhdari, said: "The council agreed
on the decision to establish a southern and central
Iraqi region within the framework of a federal
unity." He added that he had contacted the Samawah
and Kut governorate councils and that the question
had been discussed seriously.
The head of the Diwaniyah Governorate Council also
said: "We will try to announce its establishment
before the constitution is drawn up. We need a
federal system in Iraq to guarantee the country's
unity, people's liberation from the central,
exclusive regime and to prevent going back to
dictatorship." He highlighted the successful
experience of the Kurdistan region and the need to
use this experience in other parts of Iraq.
