DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, May 27 (Reuters) 15:45:59
GMT - Two Turkish soldiers and a driver were killed
when a tractor carrying military equipment hit a
mine in the southeastern Turkish province of
Diyarbakir, officials said on Friday.
The military said earlier this month that guerrillas
of the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) were
stepping up attacks in Turkey after a large number
of them were detected smuggling in explosives from
north Iraq, where the PKK is based.
More than 30,000 people, mainly Kurds, have been
killed since 1984 when the PKK launched its armed
campaign for an ethnic homeland in southeastern
Turkey.
Fighting has increased since last year, when the
rebels called off the unilateral five-year ceasefire
they declared after the capture of their leader,
Abdullah Ocalan, in 1999.
