ANKARA, May 26 (AFP) - 21h50 - The mayor of a
small town in southern Turkey was killed in his
lemon garden Thursday in an explosion whose cause
remains unclear, a local official said.
Initial reports said that the explosion was
triggered by a bomb which went off in the garden of
Mayor Fevzi Dogan in his constituency of Atakent in
the southern Turkish province of Mersin on the
Mediterranean coast.
But the governor of Mersin told Anatolia news agency
that police were still investigating the cause of
the explosion.
"According to the incoming information, there was an
explosion in the mayor's garden, but its cause
remains unclear," Governor Atilla Osmancelebioglu
said.
The 55-year-old Dogan, who hailed from the small
centre-right True Path Party (DYP) sustained severe
injuries in the explosion and died in hospital,
Anatolia said.
