SIIRT, Turkey, May 17 (Reuters) - Two suicide
bombers from the Kurdish rebel group PKK were killed
in the southeastern Turkish city of Siirt on Monday
night as they tried to approach the provincial
governor's house, police said.
One bomber killed himself after police warned the
two men to stop, police told Reuters. The other
escaped but was killed later by security forces. One
policeman was wounded.
The head of Turkey's land forces said earlier this
month the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) was
planning attacks after a large number of rebels
smuggled explosives into Turkey from northern Iraq.
Violence in Turkey's poor, mainly Kurdish southeast
has been on the rise since the PKK called off a
unilateral ceasefire last year, threatening the
fragile stability of the region.
The PKK took up arms in 1984 in a drive to establish
an independent Kurdish state in Turkey's southeast.
More than 30,000 people, mostly Kurds, have been
killed in the fighting.
