JERUSALEM, May 4 (AFP) - 10h06 - An Israeli who
deserted the Turkish army 37 years ago before
immigrating to Israel was recently imprisoned for
four months on his first visit home, the Yediot
Aharonot daily reported Wednesday.
The 56-year-old Israeli, whose identity was not
revealed, had gone absent without leave in 1968
after completing only eight of the then obligatory
18- month period of national service.
He had returned to Turkey for the funeral of his
aunt and was arrested at his hotel in Istanbul
before being imprisoned for four months at a
mililtary base on the border with Armenia.
His release was secured after the intervention of
Israeli diplomats, the newspaper added.
