DETROIT, MICHIGAN -- A federal judge Friday ordered a jailed Kurdish man released on bail while he appeals his deportation to Turkey, questioning the U.S. government's motives in bringing terrorism charges against a "model immigrant."

U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn set bail at $50,000 for Ibrahim Parlak but postponed the release order for 10 days so the government could appeal.

The government says Parlak, 43, had ties to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which the State Department calls a terrorist group. His supporters say he was never involved in violence.
