Government sources in Baghdad said today that Saddam
Hussein's half-brother, Ibrahim Al-Hassan was
captured in northeast Syria by Syrian Kurds who
handed him over to Iraqi Kurds who passed him on to
Iraq's security forces. It is unlikely that the
Syrian Kurds would dare get involved in any such
operation without at least permission from Damascus.
Iraqi government sources said Syrian authorities,
under pressure from the United States, were involved
in handing over Ibrahim, but would not specify the
role they had played.
Ibrahim, a former espionage chief and personal
adviser to Saddam, was captured in the Syrian town
of Hasakah about 50 km (30 miles) from the Iraqi
border. Iraq's government announced his capture on
Sunday but did not say when, where or how he was
caught. He was number 36 on the U.S. military's list
of 55 most-wanted people in Iraq and had a $1
million bounty on his head.
