Ibrahim Parlak files writ of habeous corpus 11.3.2005

Ibrahim Parlak's attorneys have filed a writ of habeous corpus, challenging his detention.

In January, the Turkish native was found deportable by a Detroit immigration judge.

He had been jailed in Battle Creek for seven months since the Department of Homeland Security arrested him on July 29. At issue was Parlak's past alleged connections to what's now a Kurdish terrorist organization, the PKK. In the late 80's Parlak fought for Kurdish rights in Turkey and ended up in prison there because of associations with what is now considered a terrorist organization.

Parlak was imprisoned in Turkey, but was granted political asylum by the United States after he got out.

His attorneys say it's unconstitutional to continue to hold him while he awaits his appeal. The government says Parlak has ties to terrorists, and is a flight risk.
