The
leader of an Iraqi province has sent a letter of
appreciation to South Korean soldiers who recently
completed their reconstruction mission in his
Kurdish-controlled town, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS)
said Thursday.
Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani of the northern
Iraqi province of Irbil sent the letter to the 2,000
South Korean soldiers, the JCS said in a news
release.
``In profound gratitude, the Kurdistan regional
government extends its deep appreciation for your
dedicated and meritorious service to the people of
Iraqi Kurdistan,’’ Barzani said in the letter
written in English.
About 3,600 South Korean troops are stationed in
Irbil to help rebuild the Iraqi town.
The 2,000 South Korean troops have been replaced by
a similar number of their colleagues in stages since
last week, after completing their six-month mission.
Last December, the National Assembly approved a
government motion aimed at extending the troop
dispatch for another year.
