KIRKUK, Iraq- A senior member of the Kurdistan
Democratic Party of Massoud Barzani said he escaped
an assassination bid on Saturday after a roadside
bomb hit his convoy near the northern Iraqi oil city
of Kirkuk.
Najat Hassan Karim, a member of the party's
politburo and its Kirkuk chief, said he was driving
back from a funeral service in the town of Kifri
southeast of Kirkuk when the bomb exploded, wounding
a guard and damaging three vehicles.
"This is the first time this happens to me. I am
shocked. It was really a miracle that I did not
die," he said after the attack, which occurred at
about 6:00 pm (1500 GMT).
Barzani is one of the most vocal proponents of
giving the multi-ethnic tinerbox of Kirkuk to the
Kurds, a position strongly resented by the area's
Sunni Arab and Turkmen population.
