Police
intervention with pepper gas wounds 12, Diyarbakır
(Kurdistan-Turkey)
In Dağkapı, Diyarbakır, the police intervention with
pepper gas in a mass of demonstrators who wanted to
protest the day, 15.Feb, 1999, when Kurdish People's
Leader Abdullah Ocalan was brought to Turkey,
wounded 12 individuals including 2 police.
More than 50 protestors who wanted to march on
Dağkapı Meydanı (Dagkapi Square), Diyarbakır to
protest the 6th anniversary of Kurdish People's
Leader Abdullah Ocalan's being brought to Turkey
have been taken into custody after the press
statement held. 10 objectors and 2 policemen
reported wounded by baton blows. Some of the wounded
were carried, on the shoulders, to roadside due to
the lack of vehicles carrying them to hospitals. The
reporters have also been subject to police knocks.
Actionists Irfan Inci, Mahmut Karahan, Lamih Tarik,
Lutfu Salik, Museher Ulker, Gokhan Biter, Mehmet
Tanrikulu, Fatma Sumbul, Faysal Dagli and a person
named Gokhan (Whose surname could not be achieved),
policemen Yildirim Ustuner and Ramazan Ak reported
affected by pepper gas and taken to the State and
SSK hospitals in Diyarbakir.
Armed
intervention in demonstration
The police who wanted to scatter a group of
demonstrators protesting the 6th anniversary of the
Feb 15. 1999, when Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah
Ocalan was brought to Turkey, in Gunesli Mahallesi (Gunesli
District), Akdeniz Town, Mersin, have fired warning
shots.
Coming together in Gunesli District of Akdeniz Town,
Some 300 individuals protested at Abdullah Ocalan's
being brought to Turkey, chanting slogans "Live long
Leader Apo", " We are by your side, Ocalan, with our
blood and souls" and "Without the leader, life is
not possible". After the police of Mersin Security
Directorate came to the protest place and fired
admonitory shots, the objectors responded to them
with stones. The police armed combat car, pumping
pressure water on the protestors to demount them,
pulled down the wall of a house.
Shutters close down in Siirt
Today, a number of shop-owners in Siirt took down
the shutters to protest the 6th anniversary of
Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Ocalan being
brought to Turkey, while a great many of residents
went out wearing black clothes to raise a protest
against the 15 Feb 1999.
Many business places in Ulus, Cakmak, Alan,
Kooperatif, Congbayir, Siveyka, Kazim Karabekir and
Karakol Districts in Siirt have opened with aim to
protest at the day (Feb.15, 1999), when Kurdish
People's Leader Abdullah Ocalan was brought to
Turkey. Participation in the action of closing up
shops has been reported more intensive on much used
streets like Gures, Tillo and Aydinlar.
A large number of dwellers in Siirt reported to have
been protesting with black dresses. Wide-scope
safety precautions were taken around the Siirt
Governorship, Municipality of Siirt and Siirt Office
of the Democratic People's Party (DEHAP). That the
police of the Siirt Security Directorate displayed
the Siirt of DEHAP with 3 cameras took attention.
It was also reported that many women in the city
have fasted for a day to protest the 15 Feb 1999.
