Gönültaş burried in Mersin

Ümit Gönültaş, who was reportedly shot dead yesterday by the police in Kurdali District, Toroslar, Mersin, has today been laid to rest in the Graveyard of the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality.

After the funeral arrangements were carried out in the Halil Ibrahim Mosque in Güneş District, the coffin was brought to the Graveyard of the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality following a 3-hour-lasting march. Ümit Gönültaş's coffin covered with yellow-red-green colours there and buried in the ground with prays and the slogans ''Martyrs don't die", "Live long leader Apo", "The fellow of Apo is immortal".

Hasan Özgüneş of the Democratic People's Party (DEHAP ), making a declaration at the graveyard, states they condemn the attack with anger and announced that a press conference on the issue was going to be held in front of the Taşbina at 12:00 midday.

After the burial of the funeral, thousands of people protested the murder of Ümit Gönültaş, who is claimed to have been killed by the police at the time of the Feb.15 protests. The Police intervening in post-burial demonstrations caused a person named Cihan Geçkin to be wounded. He was taken to the Mersin State Hospital.
