BAGHDAD (AFP) --
The Iraqi government on Sunday announced the capture
of a senior insurgency financier it says has links
with former regime elements and planned recent
attacks on polling stations.
Khamis Masin Farhan al-Ugaidi, a 51-year-old also
known as Abu Sabaa, was detained in the northern
town of Baiji on December 20, the government said.
"Abu Sabaa was involved in funding other terrorists
to attack Iraqi civilians. Abu Sabaa is also
suspected of planning attacks on election centers,"
a statement said.
The arrested man is suspected of links with two
leading former regime elements, Mohammed Rijab al-Hadushi
and Sabawi Ibrahim Hassan.
Government spokesman Thaer al-Naqib said the two men
still at large had bounties on their heads of 50,000
dollars and one million dollars respectively.
The government announced a series of high-profile
arrests in the run-up to the January 30 general
elections and said it was closing in on Al-Qaeda
frontman in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
