This
week the Kurdistan Development Corporation (KDC) was
pleased to co-ordinate a networking session for a
delegation of Iraqi-Kurdish businesses invited to
London by UK Trade & Invest.
Prior to the delegation’s arrival in London Tony
Blair’s special envoy for Iraq, Brian Wilson,
identified that ‘It [the region] is a model of what
Iraq can be. This trip will put up in lights that
this is a part of Iraq which is open for business.’
The Consul General for Northern Iraq, Dr. Noel
Guckian, opened the informal KDC session on Monday
the 21st of February by also stating his belief that
“Northern Iraq is an example that can be replicated
throughout Iraq because it is already a success
story”. Dr. Guckian continued, “KDC is bringing much
needed focus to international trade and investment
and I have been impressed by what they have managed
to organise so far”.
The Iraqi-Kurdish company representatives delivered
a strong and positive message to potential
international partners. Mr Hassan of the general
trading company Hassa Baqy Hassan sees that “The
revival of the Iraqi-Kurdistan is already happening,
with big business from Europe, The Far East and
China already in the region. The prosperity of the
region can also been seen at the newly completed
hypermarket in Dohuk, it is the largest hypermarket
in Iraq.”
Mr Al Naim, Operations Manager at Zozik Company
believes that “Economic development in
Iraqi-Kurdistan needs to be pushed now so that other
cities throughout Iraq can benefit and follow”.
Talking about their experiences of working with the
KDC on international contract standards, Clive
Reynolds, Partner at quantity surveying firm George
Corderoy & Co told the attendees that ‘There is
considerable benefit in joining with the KDC as we
need to have both local contacts and presence, the
KDC are managing to achieve this for us.’
A prominent Kurdish businessman, Abubakir Sadik from
Mala Telecom agreed. Mr Sadik told the delegation
and attending UK business representatives that by
‘receiving the impartial and honest advice of the
KDC, Mala Telecoms has managed to get in touch with
many serious players internationally’.
The Kurdistan Development Corporation (KDC) is an
initiative established jointly by the Kurdistan
Regional Government (KRG) and regional/international
