Public prosecutors will
look into whether a Kurdish TV station based in
Copenhagen is a tool for terrorists
Political hot potato ROJ TV has been passed on from
the Copenhagen Police to state prosecutors, who will
investigate whether the Copenhagen-based Kurdish
television station supports terror group PKK.
'We've passed the case on to the public prosecutor
based on its precedence-setting nature, as well as
in the interest of the public,' said police
commissioner Hanne Bech Hansen.
Hansen refused to comment on what the police's
investigation into the station's alleged connections
with the PKK had turned up.
The PKK is listed by the EU as a terrorist
organisation, and Turkey has accused the station of
receiving money from the organisation. The station
denies the charges.
Danish legislation makes it illegal to support
terror organisations financially or in other
'significant' ways.
However, it is not illegal to receive money from
organisations that have been listed as terrorist
organisations.
The minister of justice, who would be responsible
for making the ultimate decision on whether ROJ TV
can be prosecuted under anti-terror legislation, has
asked the Criminal Law Panel to determine whether it
should be illegal to receive money from terror
groups.
