Barzani welcomes
relations with Israel
(Al-Taakhi)
Kurdistan regional government president Masood
Barzani said Sunni Arabs' participation in the
elections will help achieve national unity, through
which Iraq can eliminate its complicated and serious
problems. He also denied that Israeli individuals
were at Erbil's airport but added that it is not a
crime to have relations with Israel. “Whenever the
Iraqi government decides to normalize relations with
Israel, we will open an Israeli consulate in Erbil,”
he affirmed.

Aziz Seeks Asylum for His Family
(Al-Mashriq)
An Italian lawyer said (former Iraqi foreign
minister and vice-president under Saddam Hussein's
regime) Tariq Aziz has asked the Italian government
to grant his family asylum in Italy. Aziz (a
Christian) asked the Pope to guard his rights as a
prisoner. The source added that Aziz said, “They
want to settle scores with me and with my family.”
He claimed that two of his sons were abducted but
did not mention who perpetrated the alleged crimes.

Ja'afari Receives Cheney
(Al-Bayan)
Prime minister Ibrahim al-Ja'afari received the US
vice-president, Dick Cheney, who arrived in Baghdad
on Sunday. Cheney spoke highly of the (Iraqi)
democratic process and the recent elections. He
praised Iraq's economic and security developments as
well as the government's finance and administration.
Ja'afari described the blossoming political process,
including the vast participation of voters in the
recent elections. He affirmed that Iraq is moving
toward national unity.

Investigations into Jadiriya Jail
(Al-Ittihad)
Deputy prime minister Roz Noori Shawes, head of the
investigative committee looking into (torture and
mistreatment allegations at) al-Jadiriya jail paid a
visit to the notorious jail (in Baghdad.) He
inspected the facility, which is connected to the
ministry of interior, in order to properly deal with
officials in charge of the jail who violated the
rights of detainees there. Shawes added that all of
the detainees are now in the custody of the judicial
council, which will interview them and study their
cases. (US forces reported they stumbled upon the
secret jail, which held 170 detainees, last month.)

(Sadr): Sunnis’ Participation Enhanced the
Political Process
(Al-Sabah)
The young Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr said the
participation of Sunni Arabs in the elections
enhanced the political process. He added that the
wide participation of Iraqis in the recent election
reflected the vitality of the Iraqi people. Sadr
said the people will decide the government's future.
He emphasized that he supports any list that will
better serve the people and any government that
works for Iraq's independence. The electoral victory
is a victory for Iraq, Sadr added.

Hakim Blesses Successful Elections
(Al-Adala)
The leader of the Supreme Council of the Islamic
Revolution in Iraq, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim,
congratulated the Marjaiya (Shia religious
authority) for a successful election. Wide
participation by voters will positively reflect on
the region and on Iraq, he said. Hakim declared that
his coalition (the United Iraqi Alliance, which now
controls parliament) is open to different political
powers in Iraq and will work to fulfill Iraqis'
hopes and expectations. He praised the Iraqi people
for defying terrorists who tried to stop them from
voting.
