In groundbreaking ceremonies attended by the US
Ambassador in Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, high-ranking
Kurdistan regional government leaders and some
Sulaimaniyah University professors and students,
Iraqi president Jalal Talabani (who is also head of
the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party) laid the
cornerstone of the American University in
Sulaimaniyah. Kurdistan region president Mustafa
Barzani thanked Talabani and congratulated the
students of Sulaimaniyah and Kurdistan. He said he
appreciated Talabani's efforts to reopen

Sistani Calls for Wide Participation
(Al-Mashriq)
The Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani has
called on Iraqis to participate widely in the
elections so as not to lose an historic opportunity.
He has not endorsed any alliance. In a declaration
issued by his office, Sistani said that this
election is as important as the previous one, and
that all Iraqis should vote for the alliances they
believe will represent their interests in the next
parliament. Sistani's representative in Karbala,
Sheikh Abdul Mahdi al-Karbalee, told hundreds of
worshipers at the Imam al-Hussein holy shrine that
the Marjaiya (the Shia religious leadership) urged
the people to participate in the elections and
critically evaluate the lists.

Association of Muslim Scholars Aids Elections
(Al-Iraq al-Yoom)
A prominent figure from the Association of Muslim
Scholars issued an edict encouraging all Sunnis to
participate in the elections. The head of the
association in the south, Sheikh Yousif al-Hassan,
said all Iraqis should have representatives in
parliament, municipal councils and provincial
councils. He said if they are outside of
decision-making circles, their (voices) will not be
considered. For this reason he urged Sunnis to
participate heavily in the coming elections. He
called on Sunnis to vote for the (Iraqi Accordance
Front) list led by (Sunni Arab leader) Adnan al-Dulaimi.
