A British plastic
surgeon is teaching Iraqi doctors how to reconstruct
ears - so they can help restore the 1,300 removed by
Saddam Hussein's torturers.
David Gault builds an ear framework from rib
cartilage which is then "clothed" with skin from the
side of the head.
Three surgeons from the war-torn country have
visited the UK to learn from him.
Mr Gault said he was horrified by the stories of
abuse relayed by his Iraqi counterparts.
He said: "I was stunned and shocked that anyone
would do that."
It is estimated that around 1,350 ears were removed,
mostly as punishment for people who defected from,
or refused to do, military service.
Ali Shakowan, who now lives in Manchester, is an
Iraqi Kurd who was mutilated when he was seized by
Saddam's secret police.
The doctor was able to reconstruct his ear. Mr
Shakowan said: "I am very, very happy. Every day I
pray for Mr Gault."
