Open letter to KDP leader Mr Masud Barzani- Dr Kamal case 27.12.2005

The unjust abduction, detention and arbitrary conviction of Dr Kamal can only harm this united course of action. The continuation of Dr Kamal’s detention will create a very serious rift between your party and Kurdish writers and intellectuals everywhere and will cause a great international scrutiny of the political reality in Kurdistan. You, your family and your party will win nothing by testing your power against a conscientious honest writer.

I very much hope that you will free Dr Kamal Sayid Qadir within the next two weeks and furthermore as the President of Kurdistan region you will take a historic initiative by suggesting to Kurdistan parliament to draft a Truth and Reconciliation Bill which will enable our people to face their painful past and deal with all issues and problems in the spirit of reconciliation, justice and truth.

At this historical juncture your personal decision can make a big difference: will you push our people to the path of bitter conflict and injustice or to the path of reconciliation and unity? Given the sensitivity of the issues involved and the strong emotions which the unjust treatment of Dr Kamal has unleashed, I think any decision regarding his future should be taken in no more than two weeks.
