Baghdad, 28 Dec.
(AKI) - The director general of the Iraqi electoral
commission, Abdel Hussein Handawi, has said there is
no reason to repeat this month's vote for a new
parliament but said his commission had decided to
annul the result in seats where there had been cases
of electoral fraud. At a press conference in
Baghdad, Handawi responded to pressing demands by
the Sunni list and the list led by former prime
minsiter Iyad Allawi.
"We forcefully reject the campaign of accusations
against our commission by some political parties. We
consulted with foreign and UN observers monitoring
the elections and we have found no reason to repeat
the elections," Handawi said.
He admitted that the commission had noted anomalies
in various voting stations. "There have been 1500
complaints of fraud," he said. "But our
commissioners have managed to reach all the polling
stations even though they were threatened. At the
moment we have decided to cancel the results from
some polling stations in which there were cases of
electoral fraud".
