Baghad, 15 Dec.
(AKI) - The final results of elections held across
Iraq on Thursday to elect its first permanent
assembly since the fall of former dictator Saddam
Hussein will be available in two weeks, the
Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq (IECI)'s
chief, Farid Ayar told journalists. He painted a
positive overall picture of how the vote had gone,
but condemned several espisodes of apparent
electoral fraud in various provinces.
What seems to have been a high turnout reportedly
quickened throughout the day, with people queuing to
cast their ballots, and polling stations being kept
open for couple of extra hours to allow more people
to vote. Kurds and Sunnis reportedly cast their
ballots in large numbers. Ayar noted that several
polling stations in Sunni and Kurdish provinces had
run out of voting forms, or people eligible to vote
found their names were not on the electoral roll.
Some 15 million Iraqis were eligible to elect 275
MPs from 6,655 candidates representing 307 political
groups and 19 coalitions contesting the poll. The
deputies will have a four-year mandate and will
choose Iraq's new government. The elected government
will in turn choose a president.
