Talabani urges high turnout in poll 15.12.2005

BAGHDAD, (UPI) - Iraqi President Jalal Talabani Wednesday urged voters to participate in choosing representatives to a parliament that will serve a four-year term.

In a televised speech on the eve of the landmark vote, Talabani said "Let's make tomorrow, Thursday, a day of national unity and a turning point for defeating terrorism and the enemies of the democratic process.

"We want that day to be commemorated in our history of great national glory," he said.

Talabani, who is running on the list of the Kurdistan Alliance, stressed the poll's results will lead to the foundation of the pillars of a modern state of law and the formation of a strong coalition government in which all brackets and factions of the Iraqi people would be represented.

"Such a government will be able to combat and defeat terrorism and criminal religious extremism, and achieve security and stability as well as prosperity for our beloved Iraq," Talabani added.

The president also defended the presence of U.S.-led foreign forces, describing them as "allied forces" whose presence is mandated by the international community "to liberate Iraq from the ugliest dictatorship ever known in history."

In a related development, the Iraqi Consensus Front, representing the largest Sunni coalition, charged a certain party in charge of the elections might falsify results in favor of a political bloc competing in the elections.

The front said in a statement that it received reliable information indicating certain election officials received large amounts of money in return for manipulating the results in favor "of a certain bloc."
