Kurdish student stabbed by Turkish nationalists in
Konya
Nov 24 - A Kurdish student, originally from Semdinli,
was attacked and stabbed by Turkish MHP nationalists
when he was walking to his dormitory from school in
the city of Konya in Turkey on Sunday.
Savas Bahar was stabbed several times in his arms
and legs before his friends managed to rescue him.
Bahar studies Tourism at the Selcuk University in
the city of Konya. Bahar was taken to hospital for
surgery and his condition was reported to be stable.
Bahar's family is living in the city of Semdinli in
Kurdistan (southeastern Turkey). Semdinli was the
scene of violent clashes between Turkish police and
Kurdish demonstrators, who protested the bomb attack
carried out by a Turkish military intelligence unit
on a Kurdish bookstore owned by a former Kurdish PKK
guerrilla.
Hate crimes against Kurds in Turkey have increased,
as upon a signal, since large-scale Turkish military
operations began against Kurdish guerrillas in the
beginning of 2004. The Turkish military operations
also forced the PKK to end their five-year
unilateral ceasefire in June 2004.
Second Turkish military black-op intelligence
unit unveiled, six arrested
Nov 24 - A second Turkish military black-op
intelligence (JITEM) unit has been unveiled and six
people have been arrested by police for carrying out
bomb attacks on a Turkish prosecutor's car, a
Turkish police station and a clothing warehouse, all
in the city of Silopi in northern Kurdistan
(southeastern Turkey) between Nov. 10 and Nov. 22.
The JITEM unit consisted of six members, among them
two Kurdish paramilitary Village Guards, one unnamed
informer and three other unnamed members whose
affiliations were kept secret by the Turkish state
prosecutor in Silopi. The three members whose
affiliations were kept secret are believed to be
Turkish military personnel.
The JITEM members Sabri Binzat (Village Guard),
Mehmet Özkan (Village Guard) and four others only
named as C.D, C.B, D.A and A.K, are accused of three
bomb attacks in the city, among them the bomb that
was set off on Nov. 10 under the Turkish state
prosecutor Talip Demirezen car outside the building
of the Sirnak Governorship's Silopi Provincial
District.
The attacks that the JITEM unit is being
investigated for are as following:
* November 10 - A car bomb that was set off under
the Turkish state prosecutor Talip Demirezen's car
outside the building of the Sirnak Governorship's
Silopi Provincial District. No one was killed or
wounded in the attack.
* November 20 - Two bombs that went off at 21:50
(9:50 p.m. EET) outside the Silopi Police
Headquarters. The bombs made great physical damage
but no one was killed or wounded in the attack.
* November 22 - A bomb that went off outside Sinan
Clothing Warehouse at 02:00 (2 a.m. EET). No one was
killed or wounded in the attack.
The investigations have been declared confidential
by the Turkish state prosecutor, making it nearly
impossible for local media to follow the case.
The Turkish military, media and the governor of
Sirnak had blamed the Kurdish resistance movement
PKK for the bomb attacks.
