DIYARBAKIR,
Kurdistan-Turkey, Nov 15 (AFP) - 13h12 - Three
soldiers were killed in eastern Turkey on Tuesday in
a land mine explosion blamed on separatist Kurdish
rebels, local officials said.
The mine, planted on a rural road in the province of
Van, was detonated by remote control, the sources
said.
Security forces launched an operation in the region
to hunt down the assailants, believed to be members
of the rebel Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
Land mine attacks have become a pattern of PKK
violence in Turkey's mainly Kurdish eastern and
southeastern provinces since the group called off a
five-year unilateral ceasefire in June 2004.
The Kurdish conflict has claimed some 37,000 lives
since 1984 when the PKK, blacklisted as a terrorist
organization by Turkey, the European Union and the
United States, took up arms for Kurdish self-rule.
